Difficult Bible passages opened up spiritually
The Bible is the core of Christianity. It is by no means always simple. There are dark and difficult passages in the Old Testament, but also in the New Testament, which frighten us, whose provocation makes us angry. Or which contradict what we consider to be the real thing. The sacrifice of Isaac, for example, or the vengeance Psalms. Or the threatening speeches of Jesus in the New Testament. "If thine eye deceive thee, pluck it out!" Some Christians read over such passages, or bend them to fit their theology, or flush them soft. But just beneath a hard shell can be hidden an important fruit.
Anselm Grün interprets such passages, wrestling with their understanding. He shows: The goal of the Bible is always to open our eyes and look at our lives as God intends them to be.
